Grape Pomace

Grape Pomace Drying

Grape pomace drying stabilises the skins, seeds and stems left after pressing at a winery or grape juice plant. Because seeds, skins and stalks separate cleanly once dry, the material can be split into grapeseed oil feedstock, polyphenol-rich skin powder and fuel. Wineries dry pomace to escape seasonal disposal peaks and create saleable fractions.

Quick answer

To dry grape pomace, GEM recommends the Mesh Belt Dryer (Meshotherm) and Band Dryer (Beltotherm). Typical moisture is 55–70% in the feed and 8–10% after drying. Rotary Dryer is used when the feed or site calls for it. Every project starts with a pilot trial on your own sample.

The challenge

What makes Grape Pomace hard to dry

  • Harvest season concentrates the whole year's pomace into a few weeks, so the dryer must absorb high peak tonnages.
  • Anthocyanins and tannins in red grape skins fade or oxidise when the material is overheated or dried too slowly.
  • Stems and seeds dry at different rates from skins, giving uneven final moisture unless bed depth is managed.
  • Fermented pomace can carry residual alcohol, so the drying line needs venting and vapour handling designed accordingly.
How GEM dries it

The right dryer for Grape Pomace

Grape pomace is loose and porous, so a Meshotherm mesh belt pushes air through the bed economically; a Beltotherm band is chosen when skin powder must stay food-grade. A rotary dryer handles destemmed pomace bound for fuel or feed where colour does not matter.

The value

What drying Grape Pomace unlocks

Dried pomace can be stored and sold across the year instead of piling up during vintage. Seed, skin and stalk fractions each command different buyers, and lower water content cuts transport and spreading costs sharply.

Dried Grape Pomace becomes

  • Grapeseed oil extraction feedstock
  • Grape skin powder and polyphenol extracts
  • Ruminant feed supplement
  • Biomass fuel from stalks

Buying a Grape Pomace dryer?

Plants searching for a grape pomace dryer or comparing a grape marc drying usually need three answers: which dryer fits, what it costs to run, and how fast it pays back. For Grape Pomace, we start from your throughput, current moisture (typically 55–70%) and the target (8–10%), trial a sample on the Mesh Belt Dryer, and return a sized recommendation with a budget quotation for your food and animal feed operation.

FAQ

Grape Pomace: questions buyers ask

Should grape seeds be separated before or after drying?
Usually after. Wet pomace sticks together, while dried pomace screens cleanly into seeds, skins and stalks. Separating after drying gives seed oil processors a clean feed and leaves a skin fraction suitable for milling into powder.
Does drying destroy the polyphenols in grape pomace?
Controlled-temperature drying retains most of them. Losses rise with high air temperatures and long exposure, so belt dryers with zoned temperatures are preferred for extract-grade pomace. A pilot trial measures colour and retention on your own material.
