Where moisture becomes a quality, energy, safety or compliance problem.

Across food, brewing, forestry, pharma, chemicals, sludge, recycling and minerals, excess or inconsistent moisture can affect specification, throughput, storage, emissions, energy use and process safety.

Food / Dairy

Final moisture must be repeatable without damaging product quality.

Food powders, dairy ingredients and cereals may be sensitive to overheating, colour, flavour, hygiene and residence time.

Drying objective: control temperature, airflow and residence time around the product specification.
Brewing / Fermentation

Wet spent grain and fermentation solids are heavy and unstable.

High moisture increases transport burden and can limit feed, ingredient or energy-recovery routes.

Drying objective: stabilize moisture for the intended downstream use.
Forestry / Biomass

Variable moisture lowers useful energy value and process consistency.

Wood, bark, sawdust and biomass can vary widely before pelletising, briquetting, storage or combustion.

Drying objective: deliver stable moisture and predictable downstream performance.
Chemical / Solvent

Residual moisture or solvent can cause caking, instability or off-spec product.

Chemical cakes, salts and crystals may also introduce corrosion, vapour, dust or explosion-risk considerations.

Drying objective: match the dryer to material behaviour, construction materials and hazard profile.
Dust / DSEAR

Combustible dusts, gases or vapours can create fire and explosion hazards.

DSEAR requires employers to assess dangerous substances, control fire and explosion risks, classify hazardous areas and avoid ignition sources.

Drying objective: define the hazard basis, zones and equipment protection requirements before final design.
Pressure / Steam

Steam and pressure systems introduce stored-energy hazards.

Pressure equipment can fall under the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, while qualifying pressure systems in use can require a written scheme of examination under PSSR 2000.

Drying objective: classify pressure equipment and site-use obligations early in engineering.
Work Equipment / PUWER

Safe machinery supply is only part of safe workplace use.

PUWER requires work equipment to be suitable, maintained, inspected and provided with appropriate guards, controls, emergency stops and isolation.

Drying objective: coordinate machine design with installation, operation and maintenance responsibilities.
UK Conformity Route

The correct marking and conformity route depends on where in the UK the equipment is placed on the market.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland have different product-law routes. CE and UKCA are both recognised for many regulated products in Great Britain, while CE remains the core marking route in Northern Ireland.

Drying objective: identify the destination, product scope and conformity route before shipment.

Prove the drying basis before committing to the machine.

01

Dried & Tested pilot validation

Representative material can be trialled to establish drying behaviour, target moisture, residence time and a practical scale-up basis before final equipment selection.

02

Material-first dryer selection

Band, paddle, rotary, fluid-bed, tray and other dryer types are considered according to the material rather than forcing every application into one machine.

03

Energy-conscious process design

Airflow, heat input, recirculation and residence time are engineered around evaporation load and available plant utilities.

04

Continuous industrial throughput

Systems can be configured for continuous production where batch drying creates labour, consistency or capacity limitations.

05

Integration with the UK plant process

Feeding, conveying, drying, cooling, controls, hygiene, dust management, exhaust treatment and downstream interfaces can be evaluated as one process.

06

UK conformity planning

Machinery, electrical, EMC, explosive-atmosphere, pressure-equipment, workplace-use, food-contact and environmental requirements can be reviewed during engineering so the applicable route is defined before shipment.

From moisture problem to a validated drying basis.

Before equipment size and commercial scope are fixed, we establish what must be evaporated, how the material behaves, what utilities are available, what the dried product must achieve and which UK technical or regulatory routes need to be considered.

01 / APPLICATION DATA

Define the UK plant requirement

Material, feed rate, inlet moisture, target moisture, operating hours, temperature limits, utilities, plant location and downstream objective.

02 / DRIED & TESTED

Pilot Trial

Where appropriate, test representative material to validate drying behaviour and practical operating conditions before scale-up.

03 / PROCESS + CONFORMITY

System Design

Develop evaporation load, residence time, airflow, heating, material movement, controls, risk assessment, exhaust treatment and the applicable GB or NI conformity route.

04 / PROJECT EXECUTION

Supply & Commissioning Support

Coordinate manufacturing, technical documentation, installation supervision, commissioning and interfaces with UK Approved Bodies, EU Notified Bodies, competent persons or site permitting where applicable.

Industrial dryer questions UK plants ask before they buy.

Process, engineering, safety, conformity, environmental, operations and procurement points typically established before selecting an industrial dryer for the United Kingdom.

What UK industries can GEM Drytech support with industrial drying systems?
We support applications across food and ingredients, dairy, grain, brewing and fermentation, seafood, feed and aquafeed, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, nutraceuticals, specialty chemicals, pigments and polymers, forestry and biomass, pulp and paper, sludge, recycling, fertilizer, minerals, metals and battery materials.
Can GEM Drytech test our material before we invest in a full-scale dryer?
Yes. Through the Dried & Tested pilot programme, representative material can be evaluated to establish drying behaviour, operating conditions and a practical design basis before final equipment selection.
Which machinery rules apply in Great Britain?
For England, Scotland and Wales, machinery placed on the market or put into service is governed by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, as amended. The manufacturer must identify the applicable essential requirements, complete the appropriate conformity assessment, prepare technical documentation and provide the required declaration and marking.
Does a dryer for Great Britain need UKCA marking, or is CE marking accepted?
As of September 2026, Great Britain recognises both UKCA and CE marking for machinery and many other regulated product sectors covered by the UK product-safety framework. The correct conformity route still depends on the product scope, standards used and whether third-party assessment is required.
Are the rules the same in Northern Ireland?
No. Northern Ireland follows a different product-law route. For regulated machinery and related product sectors, CE marking remains the main route; where mandatory third-party conformity assessment is carried out by a UK body for the NI market, CE plus UKNI can apply. The destination should therefore be identified before conformity planning is finalised.
What electrical and EMC requirements can apply to a dryer package in Great Britain?
Depending on scope, electrical equipment can fall under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and electrical/electronic apparatus under the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016. Motors, VFDs, PLC/HMI controls, panels, sensors and wiring should be integrated with the machine’s overall conformity assessment.
What applies if combustible dust, solvent vapour or gas creates an explosion risk?
Equipment intended for potentially explosive atmospheres can fall under the Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2016. At the workplace, DSEAR 2002 separately requires employers to assess and control fire and explosion risks, classify hazardous areas and control ignition sources.
What applies if the dryer package includes pressure equipment or steam systems?
Pressure equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar can fall within the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, subject to exclusions. For qualifying pressure systems used at work, the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 can require a written scheme of examination and examination before use.
What workplace-use requirements should be considered after the dryer is installed?
PUWER 1998 requires work equipment to be suitable for its intended use, safe, maintained and inspected, and provided with appropriate protective devices, controls, emergency stops, isolation, information and training. The site operator’s duties are separate from the manufacturer’s product-conformity obligations.
Can a food dryer be engineered around UK food-contact requirements?
Yes. Product-contact materials should be reviewed against the applicable UK food-contact framework. In Great Britain, the general food-contact principles of assimilated Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 remain relevant, together with national enforcement rules and material-specific requirements such as those for plastics where applicable.
What environmental permitting can affect a dryer project in the United Kingdom?
Environmental permitting is devolved and site-specific. England and Wales use environmental-permitting routes for regulated installations and emissions; Scotland regulates industrial activities through the Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018; Northern Ireland uses its pollution-prevention and industrial-emissions permitting framework. Heat source, dust, VOCs, odour, wastewater and stack emissions should therefore be checked against the plant location and permit.
Is there one universal UK certification for a complete industrial dryer?
No. A complete dryer can involve different legal routes for machinery, electrical equipment, EMC, explosive-atmosphere equipment, pressure equipment, workplace use, food contact and environmental permits. The required marking, declaration, technical file and third-party involvement depend on the actual configuration and destination within the UK.
When is a UK Approved Body, EU Notified Body or other competent third party required?
Third-party involvement depends on the legislation and conformity route. Some product categories under pressure-equipment or explosive-atmosphere rules require independent assessment, while many machinery and electrical routes can be manufacturer-led. The final classification should be completed before selecting the conformity body.
Can GEM Drytech provide UK-market-compatible components and documentation?
Yes. Component selection, electrical architecture, PLC/HMI controls, motors, VFDs, safety devices, instrumentation, drawings, manuals, risk documentation, declarations and project-specific conformity evidence can be planned during engineering according to the final scope and destination.
What information should we share to receive a dryer recommendation?
Please share the material name and composition, feed rate, inlet moisture, required final moisture, operating hours, particle or sludge characteristics, temperature limits, available heating source, electrical supply, UK plant location and intended use of the dried product.
