Drying engineered for precision, repeatability and process integration.

Swiss processors often work with high-value products, controlled manufacturing environments and strict process specifications. Moisture can influence stability, flowability, purity, downstream handling, storage, energy use and production capacity.

How is the dryer selected? The drying basis is developed from feed rate, inlet and target moisture, evaporation load, thermal sensitivity, particle or sludge characteristics, available heat source, emissions and dust-handling needs, automation, site requirements and downstream use. Representative material can also be evaluated through Gem Drytech’s Dried & Tested pilot program before final equipment selection.

Where moisture becomes a quality, capacity or compliance problem.

Across pharmaceutical, chemical, food, dairy, biomass, sludge, mineral and advanced-material processing, excess or inconsistent moisture can affect product specification, Swiss Conformity, handling, storage, energy use and downstream process stability. The drying system must be matched to the material behaviour and Swiss plant requirements.

Pharma / Biotech

Sensitive products need controlled drying without thermal damage.

APIs, intermediates, fermentation solids and biological materials may have narrow thermal limits, containment requirements and strict final-moisture specifications.

Drying objective: define a controlled drying window around temperature, residence time, product behaviour and containment needs.
Fine Chemical

Residual moisture can cause caking, instability or off-spec product.

Salts, crystals, pigments and intermediates may require tightly defined moisture while also presenting corrosion, dust or solvent-handling considerations.

Drying objective: match dryer type, materials of construction, temperature limits and final-moisture specification to the actual product.
Food / Dairy

Quality and hygiene depend on repeatable moisture control.

Food and dairy ingredients can be sensitive to overheating, contamination risk, colour, aroma, texture and cleanability.

Drying objective: achieve stable final moisture with controlled temperature, hygienic design and maintainable process access.
Biomass / Wood

Variable moisture lowers fuel value and limits densification.

Wood residues and biomass can arrive with fluctuating moisture, particle size and bulk density before pelletizing, storage or energy use.

Drying objective: deliver stable moisture and predictable downstream handling while using the available heat source efficiently.
Sludge / Biosolids

Wet solids carry unnecessary mass and storage burden.

Municipal and industrial sludge may require significant water evaporation before disposal, transport, thermal use or beneficial recovery.

Drying objective: reduce water mass and stabilize the solids around the intended downstream route.
Minerals / Advanced

Dense or abrasive filter cakes need robust evaporation and solids handling.

Mineral, graphite and advanced-material streams may be abrasive, dense or contamination-sensitive and require a tightly controlled final moisture.

Drying objective: engineer heat transfer, residence time and material movement around the actual cake or powder behaviour.
Throughput / Energy

Drying capacity and energy use must match production reality.

Under-sized evaporation duty, long batch cycles or poor heat integration can restrict plant output and increase operating cost.

Drying objective: size the dryer from the evaporation load and production schedule, then optimize airflow, recirculation and available waste heat.
Swiss Conformity

Late conformity decisions can force redesign after equipment is built.

Machine safety, electrical, EMC, pressure equipment, explosive-atmosphere and hygienic requirements can affect component selection, controls and technical documentation.

Drying objective: identify the applicable Swiss conformity and documentation route during project engineering rather than after shipment.

Prove the drying basis before committing to the machine.

01

Dried & Tested pilot validation

Representative material can be trialed to establish drying behavior, target moisture, residence time and a practical scale-up basis before final equipment selection.

02

Material-first dryer selection

Band, paddle, rotary, fluid-bed, tray and other dryer types are considered according to the material rather than forcing every application into one machine.

03

Energy-conscious process design

Airflow, heat input, recirculation and residence time are engineered around the evaporation load and available plant utilities.

04

Continuous industrial throughput

Systems can be configured for continuous production where batch drying creates labor, consistency or capacity limitations.

05

Integration with the Swiss plant process

Feeding, conveying, drying, cooling, controls, containment, cleaning and downstream interfaces can be evaluated as one process.

06

Swiss conformity planning

Applicable machinery, electrical, EMC, pressure, gas, explosion-protection and hygienic requirements can be reviewed during engineering so the conformity and documentation route is defined before shipment.

From moisture problem to a validated drying basis.

Before equipment size and commercial scope are fixed, we establish what must be evaporated, how the material behaves, what utilities are available, what the dried product must achieve and which Swiss technical requirements need to be considered.

01 / APPLICATION DATA

Define the Swiss plant requirement

Material, feed rate, inlet moisture, target moisture, operating hours, temperature limits, utilities, plant location and downstream objective.

02 / DRIED & TESTED

Pilot Trial

Where appropriate, test representative material to validate drying behaviour and practical operating conditions before scale-up.

03 /PROCESS + CONFORMITY

System Design

Develop evaporation load, residence time, airflow, heating, material movement, controls, safety architecture and the applicable Swiss conformity-documentation path.

04 / PROJECT EXECUTION

Supply & Commissioning Support

Coordinate manufacturing, documentation, installation supervision, commissioning and technical interfaces with the customer's local conformity or inspection process where specified.

Industrial dryer questions Swiss plants ask before they buy.

These are the points plant, operations, engineering, sustainability and procurement teams typically need to establish before selecting an industrial dryer.

What Switzerland industries can GEM Drytech support with industrial drying systems?

We work across pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, specialty and fine chemicals, food ingredients, dairy, chocolate and confectionery, coffee, grains, feed and pet food, nutraceuticals, fermentation, biomass and wood, pulp and cellulose, wastewater sludge, recycling, fertilizer, minerals and advanced materials. Final dryer selection depends on the material, moisture load, throughput and product target.

Can GEM Drytech test our material before we invest in a full-scale dryer?

Yes. Through the Dried & Tested pilot program, representative material can be evaluated to establish drying behaviour, operating conditions and a practical design basis before final equipment selection.

Can the dryer be designed around our required final moisture and production rate?

Yes. Dryer configuration is developed around feed moisture, target final moisture, throughput, thermal sensitivity, particle characteristics, available utilities, hygiene or containment needs and site requirements.

What heating sources can be used for a Swiss industrial dryer?

Depending on the application, systems can be engineered around steam, thermal oil, electricity, hot air or flue gas, waste heat, heat pumps and other suitable heat sources. The preferred route is evaluated against product sensitivity, utility availability, efficiency and the applicable project requirements.

Which Swiss machinery-safety requirements are relevant to an industrial dryer in 2026?

As of October 2026, the Swiss Machinery Ordinance (MaschV, SR 819.14) remains the principal Swiss framework for machinery placed on the Swiss market and is aligned with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Switzerland has been revising the MaschV to align with EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, which becomes applicable in the EU on 20 January 2027. Projects placed on the market around that transition should verify the Swiss rules in force at the actual placing-on-the-market date.

Is CE marking automatically required for every dryer installed in Switzerland?

No. Switzerland does not generally require CE marking as a universal market-access mark. Where Swiss sector-specific legislation provides for a conformity mark, CE marking may be used in place of the Swiss conformity mark. The required conformity assessment and marking therefore depend on the applicable Swiss legislation and the final equipment scope.

What electrical and EMC requirements should be considered for Switzerland?

Depending on the equipment scope, the Low Voltage Electrical Equipment Ordinance (NEV, SR 734.26) and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Ordinance (VEMV, SR 734.5) may be relevant. The plant electrical installation is separately subject to Swiss installation requirements, including the Low Voltage Electrical Installations Ordinance (NIV, SR 734.27). Exact applicability should be confirmed during project engineering.

What applies if the dryer contains pressure equipment?

Where regulated pressure vessels, piping or assemblies are included, the Swiss Pressure Equipment Ordinance (DGV, SR 930.114) may apply. The conformity route depends on the classification and category of the pressure equipment and on the actual project scope.

What applies to gas-fired dryers or burners in Switzerland?

Where the equipment falls within scope, the Swiss Gas Appliances Ordinance (GaGV, SR 930.116) can be relevant to gas appliances and fittings. For an industrial dryer, the scope should be checked specifically for the burner, gas train, combustion equipment and site gas installation, with responsibilities clearly defined between the dryer supplier, burner supplier, installer and customer.

What applies when combustible dust, solvent vapour or another explosive atmosphere may be present?

Where an explosive atmosphere creates an equipment requirement, the Swiss Ordinance on equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (VGSEB, SR 734.6) may apply. Material properties, zone classification, ignition risks and the required equipment category should be established for the specific installation.

Can a food dryer be designed around Swiss hygiene requirements?

Yes. For food applications, the dryer can be engineered around cleanability, suitable product-contact materials, sanitation access and contamination-control needs. Applicable Swiss food legislation, including the Hygiene Ordinance (HyV, SR 817.024.1), and relevant food-contact requirements should be confirmed for the product and process.

What air-emission requirements can affect a Swiss drying project?

Switzerland's Air Pollution Control Ordinance (LRV, SR 814.318.142.1) sets general emission limits for stationary installations and additional or different requirements for certain installation types. Dryer exhaust, dust, VOCs, combustion gases and the required abatement system should therefore be reviewed against the process, heat source and the requirements applied by the competent authority.

Does Switzerland have one universal certification for a complete industrial dryer?

No. The conformity route is project-specific. Machinery safety, electrical safety, EMC, pressure equipment, explosion protection, gas equipment, food hygiene and environmental requirements can apply in different combinations. Switzerland's MRA with the EU facilitates mutual recognition of conformity assessment in covered sectors, but it does not create one universal dryer certificate.

Who can perform third-party conformity assessment where it is required?

Depending on the applicable legislation and conformity route, assessment may be carried out by the manufacturer or by an independent conformity-assessment body. The Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) accredits competent testing, inspection and certification bodies; where a recognised body is required, its scope should match the applicable legislation and the specific equipment.

Can GEM Drytech provide Swiss-market-compatible machine components and documentation?

Yes. Component selection, electrical architecture, PLC/HMI controls, VFDs, motors, safety devices, sensors, instrumentation, enclosure ratings, risk-assessment inputs, operating documentation and applicable conformity evidence can be specified during engineering according to the customer's project requirements and the regulations that apply to the final machine configuration.

What information should we share to receive a dryer recommendation?

Please share the material name and composition, feed rate, inlet moisture, required final moisture, operating hours, particle or sludge characteristics, temperature limits, available heating source, electrical supply, Swiss plant location and intended use of the dried product.
