For South African processors, final moisture can influence stability, flowability, purity, texture, storage, packaging, energy use and downstream processing. The dryer is selected around the product requirement rather than a fixed machine type.
Drying can stabilize wet co-products and process solids, reduce handling burden and support recovery routes where the material, temperature limits and final-use requirements make thermal drying appropriate.
Focused on industries where moisture directly affects product quality, process stability, throughput, storage, purity, energy use, emissions, transport or the value of a wet process stream.

Long-term project relationships, successful commissioning, performance validation and customer support across international markets including the USA, Canada and Indonesia.
Drying equipment for South African plants must balance process results, OHS Act machine safety, applicable NRCS and food requirements, environmental approvals, Eskom supply constraints and industrial integration.
PGM, chrome and manganese concentrates carry water that raises smelter and freight cost.
Washery sludge, tailings and ore fines are difficult to handle, store and transport wet.
Citrus peel, fruit pomace and vegetable pulp vary in feed moisture across the season.
Bagasse, filter mud, maize bran and germ cake vary in moisture and bulk density.
Grape pomace, wine lees and wet distillers grains spoil quickly and are costly to move wet.
Industrial production equipment needs guarding, emergency stops and appropriate inspection, testing and operator controls.
Compulsory specifications are product-specific; food processors also need hygienic design and applicable R.638 of 2018 practices.
Dryer exhaust, particulates, fuel combustion and wastewater may affect plant environmental approvals.
Representative materials can be tested to define drying behaviour and scale-up parameters.
Select continuous belt, apron, paddle, rotary, fluid-bed or other dryer technologies based on process needs.
Engineer heating, airflow and residence time around evaporation duty and available utilities.
Support consistent output for production lines handling mineral concentrates, citrus, maize, sugar, protein meals, biomass and more.
Coordinate feeding, conveying, drying, cooling, ventilation, controls and downstream interfaces.
Identify applicable OHS Act and Driven Machinery Regulations checks, NRCS compulsory-specification obligations, R.638 food hygiene requirements and NEMA/AEL environmental approvals during engineering.
Define the engineering basis and applicable South African machinery safety, NRCS, food or environmental requirements early in the project.
Material, feed rate, incoming and required final moisture, operating hours, product use, available heat, electricity and plant location.
Test a representative wet material to establish actual drying behaviour and a realistic scale-up basis.
Define evaporation load, airflow, controls, hygiene, dust and fire risk, inspection needs under the Driven Machinery Regulations and product-specific NRCS / R.638 requirements.
Coordinate equipment documents, local operating procedures, site installation, commissioning, training and project-specific environmental approvals under NEMA and the Air Quality Act.
Process, engineering, safety, conformity, environmental, operations and procurement points typically established before selecting an industrial dryer for South Africa.
We design around platinum, chrome and manganese mining, gold, coal and iron ore, citrus and fruit, sugarcane, maize and grain, wine and distilling, macadamia and oilseed, meat and poultry, seafood, feed, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, fertilizer, biomass, pulp, sludge, recycling and industrial minerals.
Yes. Dried & Tested trials use representative materials to assess the moisture target, residence time, product behaviour and scale-up requirements.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act No. 85 of 1993 establishes the framework. The Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015 cover machinery guarding, inspection, testing and operator competence, subject to later amendments. On a mine site the Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996 applies instead. Applicability and inspection requirements should be established for the actual machine and site.
No. South African National Standards (SANS) are voluntary unless a compulsory specification (VC) administered by the NRCS brings the product into scope. Mandatory approval and a Letter of Authority apply only where a relevant compulsory specification requires it; the current tariff classification and scope must be checked before import or sale.
Depending on equipment classification and workplace use, inspection, testing, guarding, emergency-stop functions and operator competence may be required under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015 and the employer’s risk assessment under the OHS Act.
Steam systems, boilers and pressure equipment may fall within the Pressure Equipment Regulations, 2009 and the SANS 347 categorisation. Classification, approved inspection authority involvement, operation and associated documentation must be reviewed for each scope; a dryer itself is not automatically a registered pressure vessel.
The National Environmental Management Act No. 107 of 1998 governs environmental authorisation. Depending on the activity, an Atmospheric Emission Licence under the Air Quality Act No. 39 of 2004, the National Dust Control Regulations, minimum emission standards and a water use licence under the National Water Act No. 36 of 1998 may apply.
Food dryers should be designed for cleanable product-contact surfaces, safe contact materials and contamination control. South African food processors should review R.638 of 2018 on general hygiene requirements for food premises, the HACCP regulations R.908 of 2003 and their applicable licensing requirements.
No. Halal and kosher obligations concern regulated products and business activities, not an automatic certification of every industrial dryer. Where meat, poultry or rendering output is certified through bodies such as SANHA, NIHT or the Beth Din, evaluate product-contact materials, cleaning and contamination controls for the customer’s assurance system.
Yes. GEM has international project experience in fruit and vegetable processing and can evaluate continuous apron/band dryer configurations according to feed properties, hygiene, capacity and target moisture.
Yes, subject to material characteristics, feed size, actual evaporation duty, ignition risks, final fuel use and available heat source.
Yes. Sludge drying is evaluated on wet feed rate, solids concentration, dewatered cake behaviour, final moisture, odour, emissions and the permitted disposal or recovery pathway.
Yes. Motors, panels, VFDs, PLC/HMI, protective devices, earthing and instrumentation can be specified for a 400 V three-phase / 230 V single-phase, 50 Hz supply against project requirements, the Electrical Installation Regulations, SANS 10142-1 and customer plant standards.
Materials such as grain dust, maize and sugar dust, fine biomass, coal fines and some chemicals require a process-specific dust/fire risk review, ignition-source controls, dust collection and appropriate protection measures, with hazardous-location classification per SANS 10108 where relevant. Do not assume any single universal certification applies.
Yes. The best heating source depends on evaporation load, process temperature, hygiene, energy cost, Eskom supply and curtailment risk, utility availability and plant emissions requirements.
No. CE marking addresses applicable EU legislation and does not by itself replace South Africa-specific import, NRCS compulsory-specification, OHS Act, food or environmental requirements. Requirements should be checked for the equipment and location.
Electrical demand, connected load, startup current and curtailment exposure are reviewed early. Where grid supply is constrained, heating can be shifted towards steam, thermal oil, coal, gas, biomass or recovered waste heat so that the evaporation duty does not rest on the electrical supply alone.
