Industrial drying engineered for Nigerian production conditions.

Nigeria runs West Africa’s largest concentration of cassava, palm oil, cocoa, grain, feed and downstream processing capacity. Moisture governs product quality, shelf life, export acceptance, haulage cost, energy consumption and plant throughput.

Each system is sized around feed moisture, target moisture, evaporation load, product sensitivity, the fuel actually available on site, hygiene, dust control, emissions and the Factories Act, SON, NAFDAC and NESREA requirements that apply to the installation.

Where moisture becomes a quality, capacity or compliance problem.

Drying equipment for Nigerian plants has to balance process results, Factories Act machine safety, SON and NAFDAC conformity, NESREA environmental obligations, intermittent utilities and integration into an existing line.

Cassava / Starch

Cassava pulp and HQCF lines swing widely in feed moisture between batches.

Wet cake off the press varies with root age, variety and dewatering performance, so a dryer sized on tonnage alone runs short of capacity on the worst batches.

Drying objective:size evaporation duty on actual water load rather than nameplate throughput.
Palm / Biomass

EFB, press fibre and palm kernel shell arrive too wet to burn efficiently.

Mill co-products leave the process saturated, which lowers boiler efficiency, raises handling cost and limits what can be sold on as fuel.

Drying objective:reduce moisture so co-products become usable mill fuel or saleable material.
Cocoa / Export

Cocoa, cashew and sesame must meet contract moisture to clear export inspection.

Out-of-spec moisture risks rejection, price penalties and mould development during shipment from Lagos, Onne or Calabar.

Drying objective:stable final moisture, hygienic contact surfaces and repeatable batches.
Grain / Feed

Maize, sorghum and aquafeed need controlled drying to limit mould and aflatoxin risk.

Harvest peaks concentrate wet intake into a short window, and under-dried grain in store is where quality losses begin.

Drying objective:control residence time and final moisture through the harvest peak.
Fisheries / Protein

Fishmeal and seafood co-products degrade quickly in a hot, humid climate.

Heads, frames and trimmings must be stabilised fast, with temperature control that protects protein quality and keeps odour manageable.

Drying objective:control residence time, hygiene and final moisture.
Sludge / Recovery

Tannery, textile and municipal sludge carry water to disposal at high haulage cost.

Every tonne of water trucked out is paid for twice — in transport and in tipping — before any recovery route is considered.

Drying objective:cut water mass while respecting permitted emissions and handling constraints.
Power / Utilities

Grid supply is intermittent, so most plants run on gas, diesel or captive generation.

A dryer specified for stable grid power behaves differently on a site that switches between DisCo supply and on-site generation during a shift.

Design consideration:match heating and drive load to the utilities actually available on site.
Factories Act Safety

Production machinery needs guarding, emergency stops and documented inspection.

Machinery fencing, boiler and pressure-equipment duties and accident reporting sit under Nigeria's factories legislation and its inspectorate.

Compliance consideration:assess Factories Act Cap F1 LFN 2004 duties and the 2018 Boiler and Pressure Vessel Regulations with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment Inspectorate.
SON / NAFDAC

Imported equipment and food lines face conformity and registration requirements.

SONCAP applies to regulated imports at customs clearance, while food and pharmaceutical production carries separate NAFDAC obligations.

Compliance consideration:verify the SONCAP route and applicable Nigerian Industrial Standards before shipment, and NAFDAC requirements for the product.
NESREA / Permits

Dryer exhaust, particulates and effluent affect environmental approvals.

Air-quality limits, abatement equipment and environmental documentation are enforced at facility level, with closures used against non-compliant plants.

Compliance consideration:assess NESREA air-quality obligations and whether an EIA or environmental audit applies to the installation.

Validate drying performance before investing.

01

Dried & Tested pilot validation

Representative Nigerian materials can be trialled to establish drying behaviour and a realistic scale-up basis before capital is committed.

02

Material-first dryer selection

Continuous belt, apron, paddle, rotary, fluid-bed and other configurations are selected against the material, not sold from a fixed catalogue.

03

Designed around available utilities

Heating, airflow and residence time are engineered for the fuel actually on site — natural gas, LPG, diesel, steam, thermal oil, electricity or biomass such as PKS and rice husk.

04

Built for tropical and harmattan conditions

Ambient humidity swings between the rainy season and the harmattan, which changes achievable final moisture and the air volumes a dryer needs.

05

Plant integration and engineering

Feeding, conveying, drying, cooling, dust control, ventilation, controls and downstream interfaces are coordinated as one scope.

06

SON, NAFDAC and NESREA planning

Applicable SONCAP conformity routes, Nigerian Industrial Standards scope, NAFDAC food and pharmaceutical requirements and NESREA environmental obligations are identified during engineering.

From moisture problem to a validated drying solution.

Establish the engineering basis and the applicable Nigerian machinery-safety, conformity, food and environmental requirements early, before equipment is committed.

Industrial dryer questions Nigerian plants ask before purchasing.

Process, engineering, safety, conformity, environmental, utility and procurement points normally settled before selecting an industrial dryer for a Nigerian site.

What Nigerian industries can GEM Drytech serve?

We design around cassava and starch, palm oil and palm kernel, cocoa, cashew and groundnut, rice and maize milling, sugar, tomato and fruit processing, spices and ginger, brewing, feed and aquafeed, fisheries, pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, fertilizer, petrochemicals, wood and biomass, pulp and paper, textile and tannery sludge, cement, ceramics and minerals.

Can GEM Drytech carry out pilot trials for Nigerian customers?

Yes. Dried & Tested trials use representative materials to assess the moisture target, residence time, product behaviour and scale-up requirements before equipment is specified.

Which Nigerian machine-safety rules should be considered?

The Factories Act (Cap. F1, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004) sets duties covering machinery safety, fencing of machinery, fumes and vapours, boilers and fire prevention, with enforcement through the Inspectorate Department of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment. Applicability, inspections and operator requirements should be established for the actual machine and site.

Does an industrial dryer automatically require SONCAP certification?

Not automatically. SONCAP applies to products regulated by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, and mechanical products fall within the regulated groups. The applicable route, the current HS classification and any exemption should be confirmed with SON or an accredited inspection body before shipment.

What is needed for customs clearance of imported drying equipment?

Regulated imports generally require a product certificate from an accredited inspection firm together with a SONCAP certificate, alongside the importer's Form M and Pre-Arrival Assessment Report. Requirements should be confirmed for the actual consignment and HS code before the goods are shipped.

What rules apply to steam or pressure-based drying equipment?

Boilers and pressure equipment fall under the Factories Act and the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Regulations. Classification, certified inspection, registration and operating documentation must be reviewed for each scope; a dryer itself is not automatically a registered pressure vessel.

What are the environmental requirements for dryer exhaust and emissions?

NESREA, established under Act No. 25 of 2007, enforces national environmental regulations including air-quality control. Facilities may be required to install pollution abatement equipment and to hold environmental documentation such as an Environmental Impact Assessment, environmental audit or management plan. Obligations should be assessed for the specific installation.

What hygiene and registration requirements matter for food dryers?

Food dryers should be designed for cleanable product-contact surfaces, safe contact materials and contamination control. Nigerian food processors should review NAFDAC product registration and good manufacturing practice requirements applicable to their facility and product.

How is unreliable grid power handled in the dryer design?

Most Nigerian plants operate on a mix of DisCo supply and captive gas or diesel generation. Connected load, starting current, control-system behaviour on supply interruption and safe restart should be defined during engineering so the dryer suits the site's actual power arrangement.

What electrical supply do you design to for Nigeria?

Nigerian industrial supply is nominally 230 V single-phase and 400 V three-phase at 50 Hz. Motors, panels, VFDs, PLC and HMI, protective devices, earthing and instrumentation are specified against that supply, the project requirements and the customer's plant standards.

Can cassava peel, palm EFB, PKS, rice husk and sawdust be dried for energy use?

Yes, subject to material characteristics, feed size, actual evaporation duty, ignition risk, intended fuel use and the available heat source.

Can GEM Drytech dry tannery, textile or municipal sludge?

Yes. Sludge drying is evaluated on wet feed rate, solids concentration, dewatered cake behaviour, target moisture, odour, emissions and the permitted disposal or recovery pathway.

Does the harmattan season affect dryer performance?

Ambient conditions affect achievable final moisture and the air volume a dryer needs. Nigerian sites move between high humidity in the rainy season and very dry, dust-laden harmattan air, so design ambient conditions should be agreed rather than assumed.

What about combustible dust and fire or explosion hazards?

Materials such as grain dust, cassava flour, fine biomass and some chemicals require a process-specific dust and fire risk review, ignition-source control, dust collection and appropriate protection measures. No single universal certification should be assumed to apply.

Can Nigerian plants use natural gas, LPG, diesel, steam, electricity or biomass?

Yes. The best heating source depends on evaporation load, process temperature, hygiene, fuel cost and availability at the site, and plant emissions requirements. Southern plants with gas access and northern plants relying on diesel or biomass will often reach different answers.

Is CE certification a substitute for Nigerian approvals?

No. CE marking addresses applicable EU legislation and does not by itself replace Nigeria-specific import, SONCAP, Factories Act, NAFDAC or environmental requirements. Requirements should be checked for the equipment and the installation site.

What information is needed for a techno-commercial drying offer?

Please provide the material and its composition, wet feed capacity, initial and final moisture, product temperature limit, daily operating hours, available fuel or heat source, electrical supply arrangement, plant location in Nigeria and the required scope of supply.
