Industrial drying engineered for Kenya’s production needs.

Kenya combines major tea, coffee, horticulture, grain milling, sugar, dairy, fisheries and agro-processing industries. Moisture affects product quality, storage, transport costs, energy consumption and factory throughput.

Each system is sized around feed moisture, target moisture, evaporation load, product sensitivity, available heat, hygiene, dust control, emissions and site-specific Kenyan OSHA 2007, KEBS and NEMA requirements.

Industrial dryer questions Kenyan plants ask before purchasing.

Process, engineering, safety, conformity, environmental, energy, operations and procurement points typically established before selecting an industrial dryer for Kenya.

What Kenyan industries can GEM Drytech serve?

We design around tea, coffee, maize and grain milling, sugar, horticulture, macadamia and nuts, dairy, fish and aquaculture, livestock feed, oilseed, sisal and cotton, coconut, cassava and starch, herbs, spices and pyrethrum, wood and biomass, fertilizer, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and industrial or municipal sludge.

Can GEM Drytech carry out pilot trials for Kenyan customers?

Yes. Dried & Tested trials use representative materials to assess the moisture target, residence time, product behaviour and scale-up requirements.

Which Kenyan machine-safety rules should be considered?

The Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2007 establishes the occupational safety framework and is administered by the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSHS). Workplace registration, plant registration and examination, guarding, and periodic safety and health audits should be established for the actual machine and site.

Does an industrial dryer automatically require KEBS certification?

No. Kenya Standards (KS), many of which are adopted East African Standards, are not universally mandatory for all industrial dryers. The Standardisation Mark and mandatory certification apply where a relevant product-specific regulation requires it, so the current HS classification and scope should be checked before import or sale.

How is imported drying equipment cleared into Kenya?

Depending on the country of supply and the HS classification, imported goods may be handled through KEBS Pre-Export Verification of Conformity with a Certificate of Conformity, or through inspection at the port of entry. The applicable route and current PVoC scope should be confirmed with KEBS or the appointed agent before shipment.

Which statutory inspections can apply before commissioning?

Depending on equipment classification and workplace use, workplace registration, plant registration, examination by a DOSHS-approved examiner, guarding, emergency-stop functions and operator competence may be required under the Kenyan occupational safety framework.

What rules apply to steam or pressure-based drying equipment?

Steam boilers, steam receivers and air receivers are registrable plant under Kenya’s occupational safety rules and are examined by approved examiners. Classification, registration, certified operation and associated documentation must be reviewed for each scope; a dryer itself is not automatically a registrable pressure vessel.

What are the environmental requirements for dryer exhaust and emissions?

The Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act and its regulations address environmental protection and management through NEMA. Depending on the activity, an environmental impact assessment or audit licence, the Air Quality Regulations 2014 for stationary sources, water quality standards for effluent and waste-handling obligations may apply.

What hygiene requirements matter for food dryers?

Food dryers should be designed for cleanable product-contact surfaces, safe contact materials and contamination control. Kenyan food processors should review the Food, Drugs and Chemical Substances Act, county public health approvals, applicable Kenya Standards and, for export consignments, the requirements of KEPHIS, the relevant Agriculture and Food Authority directorate, the Kenya Dairy Board or the Kenya Fisheries Service.

Do Kenyan energy-management rules apply to a dryer installation?

They can. Under the Kenyan energy-management framework administered by EPRA, sites above a defined annual energy consumption are treated as designated facilities with duties such as appointing an energy officer, carrying out periodic energy audits and submitting an energy investment plan. A dryer is usually a significant thermal load, so it should be reflected in the plant energy plan. Current thresholds and intervals should be confirmed with EPRA.

Can GEM Drytech supply dryers for tea, coffee and horticulture production?

Yes. GEM has international project experience across food and agro-processing and can evaluate continuous band, apron, conveyor or fluid-bed dryer configurations according to feed properties, hygiene, capacity and target moisture.

Can bagasse, coffee husk, macadamia shell, rice husk and sawdust be dried for energy use?

Yes, subject to material characteristics, feed size, actual evaporation duty, ignition risks, final fuel use and available heat source.

Can GEM Drytech dry sludge from ETP or municipal treatment facilities?

Yes. Sludge drying is evaluated on wet feed rate, solids concentration, dewatered cake behaviour, final moisture, odour, emissions and the permitted disposal or recovery pathway.

Are electrical and automation components selectable for Kenyan projects?

Yes. Kenyan plants are normally supplied at 240 V single-phase and 415 V three-phase, 50 Hz. Motors, panels, VFDs, PLC/HMI, protective devices, earthing and instrumentation can be specified for that supply, for Kenya Standards and IEC-based installation practice, and for customer plant standards. Electrical installation work should be carried out by licensed electrical workers and contractors.

What about combustible dust and fire/explosion hazards?

Materials such as tea dust, maize and milling dust, macadamia shell fines, fine biomass and some chemicals require a process-specific dust and fire risk review, ignition-source controls, dust collection and appropriate protection measures. Do not assume any single universal certification applies.

Can Kenyan plants use steam, thermal oil, electricity, biomass or waste heat?

Yes. The best heating source depends on evaporation load, process temperature, hygiene, energy cost, utility availability and plant emissions requirements. Many Kenyan agro-processing sites already have biomass residues such as bagasse, coffee husk or macadamia shell that can be evaluated as fuel.

Is CE certification a substitute for Kenyan approvals?

No. CE marking addresses applicable EU legislation and does not by itself replace Kenya-specific import conformity, Kenya Standards, occupational safety, food or environmental requirements. Requirements should be checked for the equipment and location.

What information is needed for a techno-commercial drying offer?

Please provide material, composition, wet feed capacity, initial and final moisture, product temperature limit, daily operating hours, available fuel or heat, county and factory location in Kenya, and the required scope.
