Representative material can be tested to understand drying behaviour, residence time, temperature and final moisture before scale-up.

02

Material-first dryer selection

Band, paddle, rotary, fluid-bed, tray and other systems are evaluated according to the material and process objective.

03

Energy-conscious process design

Airflow, heat, recirculation and residence time are balanced against evaporation duty and available utilities.

04

Continuous industrial production

Solutions can be configured for continuous operation where batch processes limit capacity, labour or uniformity.

05

Integration with the Italian plant line

Feeding, conveying, drying, cooling, automation, dust, exhaust air and downstream interfaces can be considered as one system.

06

Italy / EU conformity planning

Machinery, electrical, EMC, ATEX, pressure, hygiene and permitting needs can be considered during engineering.

From the moisture problem to a validated design basis.

Before fixing equipment size and supply scope, we establish evaporation duty, material behaviour, available utilities, product objective and applicable Italy/EU requirements.

01 / APPLICATION DATA

Define the Italian plant requirement

Material, feed rate, inlet and final moisture, operating hours, temperature limit, heat source, electrical supply and downstream objective.

02 / DRIED & TESTED

Pilot Trial

Where useful, representative material is tested to validate drying behaviour and operating conditions before scale-up.

03 / PROCESS + CONFORMITY

System Design

Evaporation load, residence time, airflow, heating, material handling, controls, risk assessment, exhaust air and the applicable Italy/EU conformity route.

04 / PROJECT EXECUTION

Supply & Commissioning Support

Manufacturing, technical documentation, Italian-language manuals, installation supervision, commissioning and notified-body interfaces where required.

Where moisture affects quality, energy, capacity or safety.

Requirements change by material and industry. A sound drying basis considers product, energy, safety, handling, exhaust air and conformity from the beginning.

Food Quality

Inconsistent final moisture

Pasta, ingredients, dairy, tomato and vegetable products can be sensitive to temperature, residence time and hygiene.

Drying objective: control temperature, airflow and residence time for repeatable quality.
Wine / Olive / Agro-Food

High-moisture by-products

Grape pomace, olive pomace, peels, seeds and press cake can create storage and transport costs but can also have value for feed, energy or ingredients.

Drying objective: reduce water mass and stabilize the material for its intended use.
Pharma / Nutraceutical

Tight specifications and thermal sensitivity

APIs, botanical extracts, intermediates and granules can require precise temperature, containment and residual-moisture control.

Drying objective: define the thermal profile and system around the product and risk.
Chemicals / Solvents

VOC, corrosion or explosive-atmosphere risk

Filter cake, salts, crystals and chemical intermediates can require specific materials of construction, condensation, solvent recovery or ATEX protection.

Drying objective: integrate process safety, materials compatibility and vapour management into the design basis.
Wood / Biomass / Paper

Variable moisture and feeding

Wood chips, sawdust, fibres and paper-mill sludge require robust material handling and uniform thermal-flow distribution.

Drying objective: stabilize moisture and maintain reliable continuous production.
Sludge / Recycling

Unnecessary water transported and disposed of

Sludge, biosolids, recovered fibre and RDF/SRF fractions can benefit from substantial water-mass reduction.

Drying objective: improve handling, transport and subsequent recovery or disposal.
Dust / ATEX

Combustible dust or flammable vapours

Applications with a potentially explosive atmosphere should be assessed for zone classification, ignition sources, Legislative Decree 85/2016 and Title XI of Legislative Decree 81/2008.

Drying objective: define the protection concept before final design.
Italy / EU Conformity

Late decisions can cause redesign

Machinery, LVD, EMC, ATEX, PED, workplace safety, food contact and environmental permits can affect components, documentation and site interfaces.

Drying objective: identify the applicable conformity path during engineering, before shipment.

Industrial dryer questions for Italy.

Process, safety, conformity, environmental and engineering points to clarify before selecting an industrial drying system.

Which Italian industries can GEM Drytech support with industrial drying systems?

We support applications across food, pasta and grain, dairy, tomato, fruit and vegetables, wine, olive oil, coffee and cocoa, feed, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, fine chemicals, textiles and tanneries, pulp and paper, wood and biomass, sludge, recycling, fertilizer, minerals, ceramics, glass and advanced materials.

Can our material be tested before selecting the production dryer?

Yes. Through the Dried & Tested program we can evaluate representative material to establish drying behaviour, operating conditions, final moisture and a scale-up basis before final equipment selection.

Can the dryer be designed for a specific final moisture and production rate?

Yes. The configuration can be developed around inlet moisture, final moisture, throughput, thermal sensitivity, material form, available utilities, hygiene, containment, exhaust air and downstream process objective.

Which machinery rules apply in Italy in 2026?

In 2026, Italy’s national machinery framework is Legislative Decree 27 January 2010, No. 17, implementing Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 will generally apply from 20 January 2027; projects near the transition should confirm the actual placing-on-the-market or commissioning date.

Does an industrial dryer for Italy require CE marking?

Where the complete assembly falls within machinery legislation, essential safety requirements, risk assessment, technical documentation, the applicable conformity-assessment procedure, declaration of conformity and CE marking must be addressed. The exact route depends on the final configuration and other applicable directives or regulations.

What language should instructions and safety information use?

For machinery intended for users in Italy, Italian-language operating and safety instructions should be planned together with the documentation required by the applicable legislation.

Which low-voltage electrical requirements can be relevant?

Legislative Decree 19 May 2016, No. 86 implements Directive 2014/35/EU for electrical equipment within defined voltage limits. Panels, components and equipment should be selected and integrated consistently with conformity of the complete machine and the site installation.

What EMC requirements apply to PLCs, VFDs and control panels?

Legislative Decree 18 May 2016, No. 80 implements Directive 2014/30/EU on electromagnetic compatibility. PLCs, VFDs, motors, control panels, cabling and instrumentation should be designed and integrated to meet applicable EMC requirements.

What applies where combustible dust, solvents or explosive atmospheres can occur?

For equipment and protective systems intended for potentially explosive atmospheres, Legislative Decree 19 May 2016, No. 85 implements ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. At the workplace, Title XI of Legislative Decree 81/2008 addresses protection from explosive atmospheres. Design should therefore consider material characteristics, zone classification, ignition sources, equipment categories and protection measures.

What applies if the system includes pressure equipment or steam?

PED Directive 2014/68/EU is implemented in Italy by Legislative Decree 15 February 2016, No. 26. Category and conformity route depend on pressure, volume or nominal diameter, fluid group and the type of equipment or assembly. For commissioning, use and periodic verification, Ministerial Decree 329/2004 and Legislative Decree 81/2008 can also be relevant.

What rules govern use of the dryer as work equipment?

Legislative Decree 81/2008 governs occupational health and safety and includes duties related to selection, use, maintenance and inspection of work equipment. Manufacturer product-conformity duties and employer safe-use duties should be considered separately but in coordination.

What should be checked for a gas-fired industrial dryer?

Regulation (EU) 2016/426 on gas appliances excludes appliances specifically designed for industrial processes carried out on industrial premises. For a process dryer, the applicable scope for the burner, gas train, combustion system and site gas installation should therefore be checked project by project together with other applicable safety rules.

Can a food dryer be designed around food-contact requirements applicable in Italy?

Yes. Product-contact parts can be specified around the EU framework applicable in Italy, including Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practice. Materials, finishes, seals, cleanability and hygienic access are defined around the application.

What environmental permits can affect a drying project in Italy?

Legislative Decree 152/2006 regulates, among other matters, environmental assessment, integrated environmental authorization, air emissions, water and waste. Depending on industry, capacity, heat source and site, exhaust air, dust, VOCs, discharges, noise, energy and waste can affect permit conditions. Final applicability should be checked for the specific plant with the competent authority.

Is there one universal ‘Italy certification’ for a complete industrial dryer?

No. The conformity route is project-specific. Machinery, low voltage, EMC, ATEX, PED, workplace safety, food-contact and environmental requirements can all be relevant at the same time. CE marking is a legal conformity marking, not a general quality certification.

When is a notified body required?

A notified body is required only where the applicable legislation and conformity-assessment route require it. This can occur, for example, for certain categories of pressure equipment, ATEX products or specific machinery categories. The need is determined by the final project classification.

What information should we send to receive a dryer recommendation?

Please share material name and composition, feed rate, inlet moisture, required final moisture, operating hours, material form, temperature limit, available heat source, electrical supply, Italian plant location and intended use of the dried product.
